Female Head

This archaic female head was found in the temple of Apollo Ptoos in Boeotia, and ancient province of southeastern Greece on the long peninsula between the Gulf of Corinth and the straits of Euboea of which the principal city was Thebes, the birthplace of Oedipus. The original is now in the National Museum in Athens.

This woman, whose position in life we do not know, wears a diadem, is carefully coifed, and wears large earrings. Consequently, we can surmise she was a person of considerable importance. Her features are largely stylized and impersonal; her expression blank and unexpressive.
