Columbia State Vet Tech Pins 14 Graduates
Columbia State Community College recently honored 14 veterinary technology program graduates in a pinning ceremony.
“Licensed Veterinary Technicians are valued members of the veterinary medicine team,” said Dr. Kae Fleming, Columbia State dean of the Health Sciences Division and professor of radiologic technology. “Columbia State serves the region by providing learners a pathway to rewarding careers and continuously supplying LVMTs who meet the needs of patients, clients and clinics.”
A veterinary technician primarily functions as professional technical support to veterinarians, biomedical researchers and other scientists. Qualified veterinary technicians are responsible for clinical pathology, radiology, surgical assisting, office and hospital management and other related duties.
Three students from this graduating class have been offered a competitive internship from the University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Veterinary Medicine. Out of 15 candidates, for a total of 6 positions, these three students were chosen: Annalee Smith, Alexis Blair and Samantha Haviland. These students will be rotating through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in various areas of medicine for a year to continue their education and training. Each student is also a member of Tennessee Veterinary Technicians Association and the Student Chapter National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America.
“The class of 2024 has been my first class that I have had from beginning to end,” said Dr. Julie Anderson, Columbia State program director and assistant professor of veterinary technology. “I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching this class. This class is made up of brilliant and determined young individuals. They have accomplished so much in their time at Columbia State. And I look forward to seeing all of their future accomplishments. They will go far!”
Columbia State has one of only six vet tech programs in the state of Tennessee. This program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and offers students the opportunity to become a veterinary technician and receive an Associate of Applied Science degree.
