(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – May 14, 2019) - - -Columbia State Community College will host summer and mathematics camps for middle and high school students during the months of June and July.

The goal of each camp is to increase students’ understanding and encourage excitement for science, technology, engineering, math, arts and humanities. 

Columbia Campus

Connecting Family and Local History through Writing - June 10-14
This is a workshop to explore the connections of family and local history through writing. Virtual and hands-on work with ancestral records and physical artifacts will be used to construct a family story. (Ages 11 – 16) 

Writing Poetry and Short Stories - June 17-21
This workshop involves introducing students to writing constructs of poetry and short story writing. Students will produce a short, illustrated anthology of poems and an illustrated short story. (Ages 11 – 16) 

Be a Forensic Scientist for a Week - June 24-28
Topics in this camp include: necessary steps it takes to become a Forensic Examiner, different methods of Forensic Science that real Forensic Scientists and crime scene detectives use, and students will get the opportunity to see how a real crime scene is worked. (Ages 11 – 15)

Williamson Campus

Beginner LEGO Robots - June 3-7   
The primary goal is to promote excitement for science, technology, engineering and math. LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Education Kits and program development environment will be used for hands-on building and programming activities. Participants will build several robots. (Ages 11 – 15)

Advanced LEGO Robotics - June 10-14
Participants will design, build and program a robot for a competition. Participants must have already attended Beginner LEGO Robots. (Ages 11 – 15)

Be a Forensic Scientist for a Week - June 17-21
Topics in this camp include: necessary steps it takes to become a Forensic Examiner, different methods of Forensic Science that real Forensic Scientists and crime scene detectives use, and students will get the opportunity to see how a real crime scene is worked. (Ages 11 – 15)

Two-Week Music and Writing Workshop - July 8-19
This two-week workshop will involve writing the script and compiling music for a short musical theater production. (Ages 11 – 16)

Differentiated Perspectives (Math & Physics) - July 8-12
In this camp, math will be introduced in creative ways, addressing topic areas such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Students will be involved in activities both indoors and outdoors, which will help them show how math concepts are a part of daily life. (Ages 11 – 15)

Math in Action! - June 10-14
This camp provides an opportunity for middle school students to increase their knowledge of math through a series of fun, interactive workshops. The goal is for students to have fun, learn fundamentals and imagine their future in math. (Ages 11 – 15)

Lewisburg Campus
