(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Feb. 6, 2019) - - - Columbia State Community College’s Pryor Art Gallery recently hosted Greg Decker for an artistic discussion and demonstration that connected to his exhibit, “Symbols and Visions” that is currently on display in the gallery until Feb. 21.
Following a discussion on his life, background and artistic style, Decker demonstrated how he starts many of his artworks using water-soluble graphite putty on a prepared sheet of aluminum. Decker led the discussion by showing examples of his work to explain his symbology, color palettes and the stories behind them. The audience then had an opportunity to ask questions to explore his work. The art demo remains in the gallery for exhibit visitors.
“We are honored to exhibit Greg Decker’s work, much less have him lecture and demo his amazing creative talents,” said Michele Wilkinson, Pryor Art Gallery curator. “It is so very valuable as students, and art appreciators, to learn how the artist thinks and draws his inspiration. This knowledge brings a real depth of understanding when viewing the work.”
Complementing the exhibit and artist event will be a haiku poetry and art workshop Feb. 6 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the Pryor Art Gallery hosted by Judy Westley, Columbia State assistant professor of English, and Anne Reeves, Columbia State Teaching and Learning Center tutor coordinator. The workshop will be inspired by Decker’s work and will be free and open for students and the public. Art supplies will be furnished, but participants are welcome to bring their own. Community members wishing to attend the workshop should register with Reeves at 931.540.1302, or by email at areeves2@ColumbiaState.edu.
The Pryor Art Gallery is in the Waymon L. Hickman Building on the Columbia Campus located at 1665 Hampshire Pike.
