Columbia State to Celebrate Constitution Day
(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Sept. 15, 2015) - - - In celebration of Constitution Day 2015, Columbia State Community College will present "Compromise and the Framing of the Constitution" Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
Barry Gidcomb, professor of history, will give a live presentation in the Ledbetter Auditorium, located in the Frank G. Clement Building on the Columbia Campus.
The delegates that arrived in Philadelphia in 1787 for the Constitutional Convention hailed from 13 different states stretched across diverse geographic regions and had equally diverse economic and political interests. The enduring U.S. Constitution that resulted was an accomplishment made possible only by the willingness of the delegates to compromise when seemingly intractable issues arose.
In this Constitution Day program Professor Barry Gidcomb will examine those issues and those compromises and how those delegates created a new federal Constitution that has withstood war, and controversy, and the passage of 228 years to date.
The event is free and open to the public.
Gidcomb holds an associate degree in history from Columbia State, bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Middle Tennessee State University, and a doctorate of history from Illinois State University.
