JENNIFER HARWELL GIFTS ART COLLECTION TO COLUMBIA STATE
(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Oct. 4, 2011) - - - Columbia State is proud to announce the installation of paintings, prints, and photographs from the estate collection of Jennifer Harwell. Harwell, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Valton Harwell, grew up in Columbia. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at The Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, after which she graduated from Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Law School. She practiced law in both Nashville and Los Angeles before succumbing to a long-term illness.
"We were honored to accept such a generous bequest," said Lucy Scott Kuykendall, Curator for the Pryor Art Gallery at Columbia State Community College. "Columbia State strives to enrich the educational experience of our students through many avenues including art. Donations of this nature, add much, not only to the aesthetic of our campus, but also to the dialogue about the value of a college education." Harwell's family gifted her large art collection to Columbia State, where it now hangs in hallways throughout the Columbia campus.
Now showing in the Pryor Art Gallery are the works of Maury County residents, Kay Keyes Farrar and Mark Dillon. The Pryor Art Gallery is located in the Waymon L. Hickman building on Columbia State's Columbia Campus. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., and on Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The gallery is also open on weekends during special events.
