Learning Support

The Learning Support Department is made up of dedicated faculty and staff committed to helping students develop the skills necessary to achieve their academic goals.

Students who do not meet the state's minimum admissions requirements should take the ACCUPLACER® assessment test, which covers skills in reading, writing, and math. Academic deficiencies can be met by taking the courses identified through testing and assessment.

The Learning Support Program prepares students who have below college-level test scores to pass college level courses and to graduate at the same level as students who tested at college level. The Learning Support Program integrates personal development and academic development into coursework and provides support services such as counseling, Teaching & Learning Centers, computer labs, and advising intervention. Learning Support makes success possible for thousands of students in their chosen field of study.

FAQ

Why do I have to take Learning Support courses if they don't count towards my degree?

Columbia State is an open-door institution, which means anyone with a high school diploma, G.E.D. or HiSET can be admitted, even if they have high school deficiencies or low ACT scores or have been out of school for several years. The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) requires that these individuals be screened and tested for correct placement in courses.

Why can't I just enroll in college-level courses and if I pass them? After all, I am paying for college myself.
What difference does it make if I take other courses in my college curriculum before I take my Learning Support courses?
My work schedule prevents me from taking the required courses at the time they are offered on the campus nearest me. Can I forget about those courses and take other courses instead?
Can I drop my Learning Support courses and keep my college-level courses?
If I withdraw from a Learning Support course before I complete all the required competencies, will my completed competencies remain on my permanent record or will I have to repeat all the work I did to complete those competencies when I repeat the course for a grade?
