“A Third-Rate Burglary:” The Watergate Break-in and the Scandal that Gripped a Nation
On June 27, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the office of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., housed in the Watergate office complex. It was discovered that the five would-be burglars had ties to President Richard Nixon who tried to cover up his connection to the incident. Associate Professor of History Greg Mewbourn will examine the motives of the men behind the break-in, President Nixon’s role in the attempted cover-up, and the impact of the resulting scandal, which forever changed the American political system.
