Details:

Beloved is a modern, literary phenomenon. Writer, Toni Morrison read the true story of Margaret Garner, a woman who believed murder was superior to a life of slavery. This inspired Morrison's disturbing ghost story of a returned, vengeful spirit. The book was the product of the complicated and dark racial history of the United States. Our panel revisits this pivotal work of history, literature, and media.

  • Professor Mewbourn examines the horrors of slavery, the racial complications of the nineteenth century, and Beloved’s roots in the post-civil war period.
  • Professor Daniels considers the literary implications of a work about a former slave.
  • Professor Lenig views the media’s reaction to the book, the film, and the strange vision of a turbulent post-civil war America reflected in the modern era.

Tune in to explore the strange magic of Beloved.
